The role of the ATG during WWI was to:
To safeguarded the only source of the strategic metal platinum in the Western Hemisphere against Japanese attack. To secured the terrain around the vital Lend-Lease air route between the US and Russia, and to place and maintained survival caches along transportation corridors and coastal regions. As part of the Mid-way campaign, Japanese forces landed on Attu and Kiska Islands. The ATG took part in the Battle of Attu, fought May 11–30, 1943. (source: Wikipedia -

This is a beautiful bronze statue of a ATG solder. He stands with his right foot slightly forward and wear Artic Clothing. His hood is up and is fur lined. He holds his rifle with both hands in front of him. A bandolier is slung sash-style over his right shoulder and passes under his left arm.
The plaque on the base of the monument reads:

1942 - 1947
During World War II under the leadership of major “Muktuk” Marston and 21 paid staff, 6,300 volunteers from seven native ethnic groups and European Americans, whose collective ages ranged from 12 – 80 years of age, including some 30 women, watched the northern shores of Alaska for enemy movement and were instrumental in the Battle for Attu, a foreign war battles fought on domestic soil.
