Jim Leonard is the man that taught Lovejoy everything he knows. He wants Lovejoy to help him with a sting involving a Klimt painting. He wants Lovejoy to pose as a contemporary art adviser with the V&A when Hans “They Call Me Midas” Koopman comes to buy the Klimt.
Leonard doesn’t own a Klimt, but he is house sitting a house where there is one. Koopman once cheated Leonard’s wife and it is now payback time. The Klimt will be swapped at the last minute after Koopman parts with some diamonds.
To add credence to his credentials, Leonard mounts a house party for Koopman with shooting. Lady Jane and her two nieces are invited, Tinker passes himself as Jane’s father and Eric, the only one that can shoot, is a farmer and landowner. All goes well until one of Jane’s nieces, who is taking her driving test the next day, backs into Leonard’s car. The fake Klimt is in the boot and the boot won’t open. Leonard’s wife drives the car to the village and gets the boot opened just in time. The sting works and everyone retires to bed.
The next day Lovejoy, Tinker and Eric are alone in the house. They have to do a runner when the owners of the house return, as does an angry Hoopman.
