Lovejoy goes sailing with Victoria. He takes her to an auction where he buys some paintings for £12. Among the paintings are four signed original paintings by artist Lionel Beckwith. Lovejoy manages to sell the paintings to a local gallery for several thousand pounds. At a public viewing at the gallery an indignant Beckwith arrives and calls the paintings frauds and threatens to sue.

Meanwhile Eric and Tinker are entrusted with £2000 of Lovejoy’s money to invest in a house clearance. A bereaved widower convinced them to do the clearance, and when they arrive at the dead lady’s cottage Tinker reckons they are on to a good thing. They pay £1500 to the widower and go to fetch transport. When they return they find a lady in residence at the cottage. They have been conned and Eric has to sell his beloved motor bike to reimburse Lovejoy.

Lovejoy returns to the auction rooms and questions the porter. The porter insists that there should have only been eight painting in the lot, not twelve. Lovejoy smells a rat. He sneaks into Beckwith’s garden with Victoria and finds that one of the paintings is of Beckwith’s private garden. Lovejoy confronts Beckwith and threatens to counter sue. He manages to get a valuable painting from Beckwith in compensation.

Eric’s losses are made up when the lady in the cottage sells a piece of furniture to Lady Jane. Lady Jane has a client in mind and the firm make a substantial profit, enough to get Eric a new motor bike.
