There is an ongoing, unresolved dispute between Dayton and Genoa as to which was settled first. It all hinges on what is considered to be the definition and actual date of a place becoming a permanent settlement. Both communities are on the historic California Trail. Wagon trains would have arrived at Dayton prior to arriving at Genoa. When each transformed from a predominently transient gathering place to an actual settlement with a permanent population is the underlying problem.
