Spirit of the Hawk
Like the First Nations story of Turtle Island – which tells how a tiny piece of soil taken from the ocean floor grew into the creation of North America – this majestic hawk spirit emerges from the earth through the trunk of the Eastern White Cedar. It perches here in a regal pose, standing guard over all of the animals and people who make their homes at West Hawk Lake and Whiteshell Provincial Park.
The Spirit of the Hawk was carved by chainsaw artist Russ Kubara of St. Andrews, Manitoba from a 500-pound cedar log originating in the Shoal Lake area just east of Falcon Lake, retrieved by logger Lawrence Feilberg of Rennie, Manitoba. The carving was commissioned by the West Hawk Lake Meteor Fest.
