In Framingham, east of the downtown section, is a large brick complex that once was the headquarters and main manufacturing facility for the Dennison Manufacturing Company.

The complex, much of which is now named "Dennison Triangle," is located along Howard, Bishop, Clinton, and Grant Streets and on the north side of the CSX/MBTA Railroad tracks. There are several buildings involved. The largest building runs along Howard Street and still has the company name in large white script letters on the roof - "Dennison Manufacturing Company." It is five stories tall and a flat roof. There are entrances widely spaced apart. Most of this building is now residential units. The west end is occupied by the company Tetra Tech, an environmental consulting firm. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts also has an office in the triangle, and there is a parking garage.

In the brick building, which appeared to be the power plant, across Bishop Street, was found the remaining office of the company that occupied the entire facility - now known as Avery-Dennison. It was fortunate that I visited when I did - I found an article online that stated that these offices were vacating the property and moving to Westborough.

Dennison was started originally in Maine in 1844 when Aaron Dennison, a major watchmaker, looked to his family to make boxes for his watches. The business was successful and expanded to making inventory and luggage tags. The company flourished under his brother, E.W. Dennison, who moved the business first to Roxbury (now part of Boston), then to Framingham. The factory was very busy, but when Avery and Dennison merged in 1990, manufacturing stopped. Avery-Dennison kept a product marketing department on Bishop Street - until now.

Dennison made paper-based and other products commonly seen. They were pioneers in crepe decoration paper. They made tags for inventory. They even made products for the computer.
