The Columbia River is the largest by volume emptying into the Pacific Ocean in North America. It drains an area of about 258,00 square miles and is 1,243 miles long. It empties into the Pacific just west of Astoria, OR, over the Columbia Bar, a shifting sandbar that makes this water some of the most treacherous in the world.
The bridge crossing the Columbia at Astoria, a bit east of the river mouth, is over 4 miles long.
