This is one of the earliest versions of a hay baler or hay press. It was powered by a horse and fed by hand. Grooved slabs of wood would be fed in to separate bales and operators on either side of the baler would pass binding wires around the bales utilizing the grooves in the slabs. The wires kept the hay compressed into bales.
