The chateau is situated on a promontory above the River Elbe. This site had previously a strategic importance. Below the chateau was a ford across the Elbe on the road connecting Prague and Upper Lusatia. Therefore, in the 12th century stood on this spot castle. The remains of a Romanesque castle is still preserved in the basement and ground floor. The original castle was destroyed the whole and in its place was the Lobkowicz, late 17th century., built a new chateau.

The chateau itself consists of three wings around the court with an area of 58 x 54 m. On the south side of this court is the connecting neck and the gateway above which rises the quadrilateral and next octagonal tower finished a massive lantern.

Zámek se nachází na ostrohu nad rekou Labe. Toto místo melo v minulosti strategický význam. Pod zámkem byl brod pres Labe na ceste spojující Prahu a Horní Lužici. Proto již ve 12. století stával na tomto míste hrad. Pozustatky tohoto románského hradu se dochovaly dodnes ve sklepení a v prízemí zámku. Puvodní hrad byl prakticky celý zboren a na jeho míste byl za Lobkovicu , koncem 17. stol., postaven nový zámek.

Vlastní zámek tvorí tri krídla okolo dvora o ploše 58,5 x 54 m. Na jižní strane je spojovací krcek a v jeho ose je vstupní brána nad níž se zvedá dole ctyrboká a nahore osmiboká mohutná vež ukoncená lucernou.
