At a time when many people were leaving Ireland because of famine and arriving in the United States, the Union Pacific was having problems with obtaining enough labor to build the eastern portion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Encountering blatant anti-Irish sentiments and discrimination in the East, many Irishmen grabbed the opportunity to obtain gainful employment on such a momentous undertaking. The historic plaque reads:
To the Irish who toiled on the Transcontinental Railroad uniting our nation.
