The churchyard lies to the east, north and west of St Margaret's church in Barking close to the ruins of Barking Abbey.

The churchyard is well tended with a large variety of headstones and memorials. One particular grave, to the Marchant family (see photos), has the inscription showing that some of those interred were drowned or lost at sea - not on the same occasion, as one would expect, but on different occasions. The National Maritime Museum has a record of the Marchants.
