The sculpture is a depiction of the character Bagheera, the black panther, in Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. Bagheera was born in captivity, escapes his cage, and enters the jungle. He wins the respect of the other jungle animals with his cunning, prowess, and insight into human nature.
A 32" by 16" by 16" bronze figure of a the panther named Bagheera and an owl are positioned on a 57" high and 60" diameter circular polished granite base. The sculpture sits in the center of a four-lobed granite basin lined with bricks. The sculpture was created by Lillian Saarinen. The fountain was installed in the Boston Public Garden in 1986.
Bagheera is shown sitting on his hind legs while reaching up with his right paw to touch the right wing of an owl in flight. Bagheera's long tail curves back towards his left front leg.
Water flows up from holes in the circular base and flows down into the four-lobed basin below.
