PICCARD/GRUMMAN PX—l5 "BEN FRANKLIN"
Oceanographic Research Submersible
Designed by Bureau Jacques Piccard for Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation

Built by Giovanoia Freres SA, Monthey, Switzerland. In July 1969, this submersible made the world‘s longest research dive when it drifted for thirty days in the Gulf Stream conducting scientific studies for the Naval _ e Oceanographic Office and tests for NASA for the future Skylab Project to study human interactions within closed, confined quarters. The Gulf Stream Drift Mission‘ added significantly to our knowledge of the Gulf Stream and the ocean in general. It remains a landmark achievement in the human exploration o'f the ocean's depths as well as an engineering landmark" that exemplifies Swiss and American science and engineering as well as the pioneering leadership of Switzerland's Piccard family in the invention of research submersible"les and deep ocean exploration.
