Make Way for Ducklings is a popular children's story written by Robert McCloskey and published in 1941. It is about a family of mallard ducklings named Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack, and Quack who are being raised in the Charles River by their mother Mrs. Mallard. The family decides to make their way from the river, through traffic, to the Boston Public Garden. Despite the odds, Mrs. Mallard and her eight ducklings successfully complete their journey, with the help of the Boston Police Department, and make the Boston Public Garden their home.

The bronze group of larger-than-life sculptures depicting Mrs. Mallard and her eight ducklings are a very popular feature of the Boston Public Gardens. Mrs. Mallard large enough so that children can ride her and have their picture taken. The eight smaller ducklings are all sculpted with and display a different persona. They are waddling in a line behind their mother.

A bronze plaque by Mrs. Mallard identifies Nancy Schön as the sculptor of the Duckling Sculpture. The date of creation is given as 1987.

A plaque by duckling number eight is inscribed:
