The construction of this Embankment type dam started in 1969. It was finished in 1972 and Lake Argyle was full in 1974. This was the second dam to be built on the Ord to supply irrigation water to the Kununurra region. Later in 1997 a Hydro electric scheme was added to supply power to the Argyle diamond mine and the towns of Kununurra and Wyndham.
