Söderskär is located in the outer archipelago of the Gulf of Finland, approximately 15 sea miles from Helsinki. On the highest point of the group of islands is the neogothic lighthouse tower, that was build in 1862 (architect Ernst Lohrmann). The octagonal tower has six floors. The tower, originally made of bricks, has been reinforced with a cover made of rails and cement in 1914-1917. The lighthouse has its original unique crystal prism equipment and lantern that are made by the Parisian Sautter & Co. The lamp is fuelled by oil, was lit for the first time 15.9.1862. The light was visible from as far as 15 sea miles, and the first fishermen were worried that the incredibly bright light would scare the fishes away. A new acetylene gas system developed by Gustaf Dalen for AGA was installed in 1957. The lighthouse personnel's offices were abolished when the lighthouse was automated. The lighthouse served the navigators loyally until 31.10.1989, when the light was turned off. Söderskär is the only demolished lighthouse in Finland. The birdlife on the island has been studied since 1940's. Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute has had a station on the island 1965-2007. Söderskär area is protected by the nature conservation act and there is a prohibition against landing 1.5-31.7. Söderskär Majakka Oy owns the Söderskär lighthouse. The company is restoring the building and renting it for meetings, ceremonials and events and organising guided tours to the island.
