Small seed drills such as this were used to plant small plots for such things as vegetables and herbs. Pulled by a horse, or sometimes several people, the drill was very maneuverable and could plant a sizable plot in very little time. The size of the feed hopper tends to indicate that they wouldn't mix granular fertilizer with the seeds due to lack of sufficient space.
