The pub stands close to the site of the old
Bradford Castle.
There is a date of 1898 above the door and with a nod to history of the old castle the walls at the top of the building are slightly crenellated. Also at the top of the building carved in stone is the original name of The Castle Hotel. The modern signs all just say The Castle.
According to a Bradford historical
website the initials M. J. B. on the date stone refer to Michael John Barry. He was a successful business man from Ireland who built much of the property around this area including this pub.
I can't find any reference to anyone called Allen with the coat of arms on the sign, so maybe it is just used as a device to imply a link with nobility and the original castle.
Although the pub is still open it currently has a 'for sale' board.
