Young housekeeper, Emily Kennedy, is housekeeper for Sep McGilby. McGilby’s wife dies and within a week Sep has proposed to Emily. Unfortunately for Emily, Sep is killed in a dry dock and Emily is made homeless.
Help comes when Emily meets farmer Larry Birch and he engages her as housekeeper. Larry has a partially paralysed wife, Rona, who is confined to her bedroom. Eventually Rona dies and Larry is forced off the farm by her relatives. Emily comes to the rescue and sets up home for Larry in a nearby cottage. Larry, however, is a drinker and ne’er do well. Emily eventually finds a note Larry has from a former lover. Emily takes revenge by setting fire to Larry’s furniture and leaves him.
Emily eventually finds happiness with Nick Stuart, the new owner of Larry’s old farm. Nick retrieves a watch that Sep gave to Emily and Emily had to pawn. She uses the money to buy Sep’s old house back. Nick finally proposes to the independent Emily.
