Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center is a National Great River Road Interpretive Center. Located at the Mississippi Headwaters in Itasca State Park. The model maps the flow, which from this point is 1,475 feet above sea level, from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico. When explored by Henry Schoolcraft in 1830, this was found to be the Mississippi's true source. Each year, thousands of visitors make a pilgrimage here to wade across the famous headwaters.
