In Lincoln, along 5th Street and at a corner adjacent to Postville Park is an old Texaco Station with a mural of the 'US 66' shield on one side.
The gas station is at the corner of 5th Street and S Washington Street, on the souteast corner. The mural is on the east side of the building.
The station is a smallish structure painted white. The oldest part has a peaked roof with an overhang that is also has a peaked roof. Garages have been built of cinderblock to the left (west). The mural is on the end of the addition. It is a standard US Highway shield with "Illiniois - US - 66" on it. The shield is about 7 ft high.
The station has the appearance of an older station. There is a Texaco sign still posted, in good condition. I could not find any direct reference to this station anywhere. I did find a few references to other old gas stations, though. In particular one site had 'Ambler's Texaco Station' in Dwight, IL, that had many similar features. That station was built in 1933, so this station could date that far back and would have been around when U.S. was around. A map of Lincoln shows that US 66 was once routed on 5th Street then Washington.
The building is now used to sell grave monuments.
