Born at Rivière du Loup, Taché entered the Oblate order and was sent west as a missionary in 1845. Ordained soon after, he became Bishop in 1853 and Metropolitan in 1871. He was influential in restoring order after the Red River uprising of1869-1870 but his best efforts were unable to prevent violence during the North West Rebellion in 1885. An architect of the Constitution of Manitaba, he was prominently involved in the separate schools controversy and fought in vain through his last years to overturn the provisions of the Manitoba School Act. He died in Winnipeg.
