The town:
Zwingen is a municipality in the district of Laufen in the canton of Basel-Landschaft with a population of about 2,200.
Zwingen was first mentioned in 1194. In 1312, the village and the castle was owned by the Barons of Ramstein as a fief of the Bishopric of Basel. With the extinction of Ramstein it came back to the bishop in the 15th century, who then let it manage by a bailiff until the bishopric was dissolved after the French Revolution. From 1792 until 1815 the area was French, then it became part of the Swiss Canton Bern. In 1994 the county changed to the Canton Basel-Landschaft.
The town hall:
The town hall is located in the main court of the castle. It was originally built in 1561 as a granary and became the office building of a paper mill company in the early 20th century. In 1993 the castle was bought by the municipality and this building became the town hall.
