Grand Marais is known as an “artist colony,” and Betsy Bowen’s Woodcut Studio is one of the town’s many art studios.
This studio is unique in that it occupies the ground floor of a 1903 church formerly belonging to a Norwegian Lutheran congregation. Betsy purchased the building in 2002 for her studio. Her career as a woodcut artist started in 1970 when she lived in Florida; she moved to Grand Marais in the 1980’s, and her work illustrates her first book “Antler, Bear, Canoe, a Northwoods Alphabet Year.” She makes her woodblocks by hand and offers her prints, cards, calendars, and books for sale.
