This early device for gathering hay into piles is difficult to determine how it actually functioned. The row of long pointed poles on the front seem to be designed for skimming the ground and gathering hay into a pile on the tines. A mechanish is provided for tipping the tines forward to deposit the hay in a pile. How the device was pulled forward is unknown. There is no evidence of a drawbar or other attachment for teams of horses.
