The two-way plow was a tremendous innovation in terms of improving efficiency when plowing a field. After completing a pass with the plow, instead of having to return to the starting point at the opposite end of the field in order to turn the soil in the same direction, the farmer could merely switch to the plow that turned soil in the opposite direction as he proceeded to make the next pass in the opposite direction. All such plows were wheeled since something needed to support the unused plowshare off of the soil being plowed.
