This is an example of the earliest horse-drawn hay rakes, designed to be pulled along, gathering up hay until the rake was full, at which time an operator sitting on the seat at the center of the rake would pull on the lever to lift the rake's tines and deposit the pile of hay to be pickup up later and stacked on a wagon.
