Following the assassination of President William McKinley, on September 6, 1901, many cities and towns erected memorials to honor the slain President. Springfield, MA commissioned the sculptor Philip Martiny to create a suitable monument. The result was striking statue.

The McKinley Memorial consists of a bust of the President high up on top of a tall granite pedestal. Next to the pedestal is an allegorical female figure, reaching up with a palm frond in her hand. The figure is meant to represent - Fame. The statue was dedicated in 1908.
