EN: Zwingen Castle was built on several islands in the river Birs, probably in the 13th century. The originally at least four islands are now grown together into one. The castle was first mentioned in 1312, it was owned by the Barons of Ramstein as a fief of the Bishopric of Basel. The site is extremely extensive, probably the original plan was to found a city within the castle walls that should compete with the neighboring Laufen. These plans could not be realized. With the extinction of Ramstein the castle came back to the bishop in the 15th century, who then let it manage by a bailiff until the bishopric was dissolved after the French Revolution. 1793 the castle was sold and went through several hands. 1913, the paper mill company of Zwingen came in the possession of the area, the westernmost part was used for production buildings, but the main and forecastle were kept in excellent condition. In 1993 the area with over 10,000 m2 was purchased by the community of Zwingen.

The bridge to the tower of the forecastle replaced a drawbridge in 1766. The covered bridge between pre- and main castle dates mainly from 1689. The main castle consists of the oval keep built around a round donjon. This is the oldest part of the complex, next to it a chapel and a large outbuilding, which was built in 1561 as a granary and now houses the town hall of Zwingen.

DE: Schloss Zwingen wurde vermutlich im 13. Jahrhundert auf mehreren Inseln im Fluss Birs erbaut. Die ursprünglich mindestens vier Inseln sind inzwischen zu einer einzigen zusammengewachsen. Die Burg wurde 1312 erstmals erwähnt, sie war im Besitz der Freiherren von Ramstein als Lehen des Fürstbistums Basel. Die Anlage ist ausserordentlich weitläufig, vermutlich sollte innerhalb der Burgmauern ursprünglich eine Stadt entstehen, die mit dem benachbarten Laufen konkurrieren sollte. Diese Pläne konnten nicht verwirklicht werden. Mit dem Aussterben der Ramstein kam die Burg im 15. Jahrhundert wieder an den Bischof, der es danach von einem Vogt verwalten liess, bis das Fürstbistum nach der französischen Revolution aufgelöst wurde. 1793 wurde das Schloss verkauft und ging dann durch mehrere Hände. 1913 kam die Papierfabrik Zwingen in den Besitz des Areals; auf dem westlichsten Teil wurden Produktionsgebüde errichtet, die Haupt- und Vorburg wurden in einem ausgezeichneten Zustand erhalten. Im Jahre 1993 wurde das Areal mit über 10'000 m2 von der Gemeinde Zwingen gekauft.

Die Steinbrücke zum Turm der Vorburg ersetze 1766 eine Zugbrücke. Die gedeckte Holzbrücke zwischen vor- und Hauptburg stammt grösstenteils von 1689. Die Hauptburg besteht aus einer ovalen Kernburg, aus der in der Mitte ein runder Bergfried herausragt. Dies ist der älteste Teil der Anlage, daneben steht eine Kapelle und ein wirtschaftsgebäude, das 1561 als Kornhaus erbaut wurde und heute die Gemeindeverwaltung von Zwingen beherbergt.
