An 8.1' by 2.5' by 2.33' bronze statue of Union soldier stands on top of a 7.5' by 5' square tiered granite base. The soldier stands at rest and is wearing a cap, cape, and knee length coat. A bayonet is on his left hip and a kit on his right hip. The soldier stands with his left foot forward, and is holding a rifle at an angle with both hands, left over right. The rifle is angled from his left shoulder to right foot.

The sculpture was created by Martin Milmore and cast at the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, MA. The statue was dedicated on October 19, 1869.

Around the base are four bronze plaques. The front plaque has the dedication:

ERECTED
IN HONOR OF THE
SOLDIERS OF
CLAREMONT
WHO DIED IN
THE REBELLION OF
1861-1865
BY THEIR GRATEFUL
FELLOW CITIZENS

On the base below the plaque is the date 1869
