Cuthbert Grant (1793-1854), considered to be the first leader of the Metis people, built the first water mill in the northwest at about this spot in 1829. It proved to not be reliable, and was abandoned after about 3 years. The present mill is a reconstruction built by the St. James Assiniboia Pioneer Association in 1974.
