The nearby memorial was erected in commemoration of the band leader of the ship, who was born in Colne, Lancashire.
The ship was the largest ship afloat at the time it entered service and was believed to be unsinkable due to its many watertight compartments. However when the iceberg struck the side of the ship it damaged the side plates of the ship covering 5 of these compartments causing the ship to sink around 3 hours later.
Hartley and the rest of the band continued to play whilst the ship was sinking to try and keep the passengers calm.
The 8 band members were amongst the approximately 1500 people who died in the disaster.
