Danny Mack Gable is better known simply a “Dan” and is one of the most beloved figures in the state of Iowa. He is best known for winning the Wrestling Gold Medal in the 1972 Olympic Games where he did not surrender a single point. Following his dominating Olympic performance Dan would become the head wrestling coach at the University of Iowa, a position he would hold from 1976 – 1997. During his tenure the Hawkeye wrestling team would win 16 NCAA Titles. Dan would also serve as the Coach of the United States Freestyle Olympic Team in 1980, 1984 and 2000. Currently Dan Gable serves as an assistant athletic director at the University of Iowa.
This bronze statue of Dan Gable was sculpted by Lawrence Nowlan Jr. and stands outside of Carver Hawkeye Arena on the campus of the University of Iowa. The 7-foot tall statue was dedicated on April 18, 2012 and show Dan coaching wearing his traditional suit and tie.
