The marker is made of rough field stone and is one of 5 markers placed at historic spots in New Salem in 1903.

The marker reads:

Site of the old Forts erected by the early settlers in defense against Indian hostilities about 1740.

New Salem was considered a frontier town, however there was no record of the town suffering any attacks. Neighboring Athol had losses. The men were called out from time to time to server again the French and Indians for about 20 years.

One interesting story it is said while the men were away the women and children assembled in the fort. It was discovered that there were men approaching the fort, so one of the women deepened her voice and called roll call of the men. The imposing force backed off thinking the fort was fully armed and ready for the attack.
