From a Bonanza TV Western Series web page:

Lake Los Angeles is located in Antelope Valley, one hour northeast of Los Angeles. Its elevation is 2,664 feet above sea level. The region was once called Los Angeles Buttes, since they were the only ones in the northern part of the county. The series of desert peaks all have their own respective names; Black Butte, Piute Butte, Lovejoy Butte, and Saddleback Butte. Only one of these desert peaks became a county park, which is Saddleback Butte in the 1970's.

In 1967, land developers bought 4,000-acres in the region, sub-divided it into 4,465 lots and built a man-made lake, renaming it Lake Los Angeles. The small community grew to 12,805 residents, and has had its economical ups and downs for years. The community failed in 1981, but with the building of the B-1 Bomber in the region, the economy was boosted. Segments of [Bonanza] episodes such as "The Mission" and "The Deed and the Dilemma" were filmed here, along with stock footage of the stagecoach.
