Martin Luther King, Jr. was a clergyman and activist leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He espoused a philosophy of seeking change using nonviolent civil disobedience.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, GA on January 15, 1929, to Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King. In 1948, he enrolled in Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, PA and graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity. degree in 1951. He continued his studies in systematic theology at Boston University and was awarded a Ph.D. degree on June 5, 1955. His philosophy of non-violence stems from teaching of Jesus and his role as a Christian Baptist minister. His desire to do God's will lead to assuming a leadership role in the American Civil Rights Movement.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, was sculpted by Derrick Barrett. Luigi Tempesta did the carving and the New Britain Monumental Works was the fabricator. The monument was dedicated on July 11, 1977.
