The world headquarters of the Assemblies of God is located in Springfield, Missouri. It authorized the opening of the school, then known as Evangel College, in 1955 as the nation's first Pentecostal liberal arts college.
During World War II, Springfield was the home of the US Army's O'Reilly General Hospital (named after the Springfield family which is best known for its chain of O'Reilly auto stores). After the hospital closed, the land on which the hospital had been located was obtained by the church for the college. When Mrs. Team Blakelylaw was growing up in Springfield, many of the original hospital buildings were still being used by the college, including the old barracks which were used as dormitories.
