The churchyard extends around the church and into a later section lower down on the side of an fairly steep hill with later and current burials. This is accessed down a wide footpath with a iron handrail from the tower end of the church. At the foot of this path is an area with graves of the Wharncliffe and Wortley families.

Also, at the foot and to the rear of the tower, is an area with the resting place of ashes and also some very old small, rounded top head stones placed against the rear stone wall.
One of these stones reads-
" Here lieth the
Body of Mathew
Stones of Howbruck
who died June ????
45 years 1765."

One of the Wharncliffe graves has a headstone surmounted with a coronet, in front and horozontal is a large inscribed rectangular stone.

The headstone reads -
"THE 4th. EARL OF WHARNCLIFFE
ALAN JAMES MONTAGU
STUART WORTLEY MACKENZIE,
( CARLTON )
much loved husband of
ALINE
and father of
JOANNA and ROWENA.
died 3rd. June 1987
aged 52 years."
Inscription on the flat stone reads-
"ALINE MARGARET BRUCE
OF WHARNCLIFFE SIDE
LATER 4th. COUNTESS OF WHARNCLIFFE
adored wife of
CARLTON
and much loved mother of JOANNA and ROWENA
BORN 10TH. MAY 1937
DIED 17TH oCTOBER 2001
Her presence lit a room

"Love is a circle that does restless move
in the same sweet eternity of love"
Robert Herrick 1591-1674."

Beside the above grave is one with the following inscription-
"JOANNA
MARGARET
MONTAGU-STUART-WORTLEY
Adored daughter of
THE 4th. EARL and COUNTESS
OF WHARNCLIFFE.
Born 15th. July 1959
died tragically March 8th. 1981
aged 21 years."

Joanna was killed in a car crash. Rowena married John Hunt in 1986.
