The placement of the wheel here is somewhat ironic. The Chisholm Trail was, of course, a famous cattle driving trail through Oklahoma. In central Oklahoma, however, the trail split into two arms. The cattle were driven through what is now the city of Yukon. The wagons, however, did not come through here. They took an easier Canadian River crossing and went through what is now El Reno, a few miles to the west.

It should also be noted that the Chisholm Trail, although it did not yet have a name, was a wagon trail before it became a cattle trail. Jesse Chisholm, for whom it is named, never herded cattle on "his" trail! He was part Cherokee and had started out as a scout. Later, he became a liaison between the Republic of Texas, the cavalry at Ft. Sill, & the Cheyenne. As part of that job, he ran freight wagons in and out of western Oklahoma. When the cattle drives started after the Civil War, they followed the trails which had already been laid out by his wagons. That is why the pathway became known as Jesse Chisholm's Trail during his life and got it modern moniker after his death (which was only a year after the first major cattle drive along the trail).
