This former mansion of the chewing gum family and owners of the Chicago Cubs sits high atop Mount Ida on the south side of Avalon. This stairway, which is now seldom used and is restricted to guests at the Inn, is comprised of 10 flights of 10 steps each plus the wider section of 12 steps below the gate for a total of 112 steps. No wonder it is hardly ever used! It is much easier to drive up the driveway directly to the rear of the mansion.
