Study in Contrasts
Two very different habitats, each with its own unique plant and wildlife communities, exist here.

Wetland Wildlife
In front of you, the permanent, deep marshes of Tule Lake provide habitat for a variety of wetland species. American White Pelicans, Western Grebes, American Coots, Ruddy Ducks, and Northern Shovelers thrive in the emergent marsh vegetation and deep wetlands of Tule Lake.

Upland Wildlife
Behind you, the juniper-sagebrush uplands and cliffs support very different plants and animals. Barn Owls, Great Hornet Owls, American Kestrels, and Red-tailed Hawks perch and nest on cliffs and feed on both rodents and water birds.
Swallows construct mud nests on the cliff face and feast on the abundant insect swarms over the lake, in May, a host of migrant songbirds move through including Western Tanager and Lazuli Bunting. a few remain to nest including Say's Phoebe and Sage Thrasher.
