Located in Haakon County, South Dakota, Philip has a population of 741 as of July 2007, a 15% decrease since the 2000 census. It is the county seat.

Its people are made up of German, Irish, Norwegian, English, Czech, and Dutch ancestries.

Philip is named after James "Scotty" Philip, supposedly the 'man who saved the buffalo'.
