''Diana of the Hunt'' was made by Anna Hyatt Huntington from around 1922 and gifted to the museum in 1962. The statue is also know as Diana of the Chase or just Diana. She first modeled and exhibited Diana at the National Academy of Design where it won the Academy's Saltus award, her second in two years. She was also elected as an academician of the Academy.
This statue is not typical of her work. Ms. Huntington was particularly noted for her equestrian statues. She was an active sculptor for over a period of 70 years. She is very famous. There is even a Wikipedia article about her.
This statue can best be described as typical of Old world mythology. In Roman mythology, Diana is the goddess of the hunt and the moon. She is typically represented as a young woman with a bow and arrow and often with a crescent moon in her hair. This is what this statue looks like. I believe it is cast in bronze. The bow is actually being held high in the air as she is standing on what appears to be a sphere. There is a dog bounding about at her feet, presumably to help out with the hunt.
