The statue in the center of the park was placed by the city of Cheyenne Art in Public Places Project in 2002.

The associated plaque reads:
"I've been to the mountaintop"

King's speech that became known as "I've Been to the Mountaintop" was delivered 3 April 1968, Mason Temple (Church of God in Christ Headquarters), Memphis, Tennessee. He would be assassinated the next day. The full audio and text of the speech may be found at (visit link) .
