The iron pump stands behind the former home of Champ Clark, former Speaker of the House in the U.S. Congress. The house was the home Champ Clark from when it purchased it in 1899 until his death in 1921. After changing hands many times it was purchased in 1973 and became under a non-profit organization with the intent of restoring a preserving the house. The house is a National Historic Landmark.
