The monastery in today’s village of Dolní Kounice is not far away from Ivancice, which was established in 1181. In 1183, Premonstratensians from Lounovice arrived at the monastery. Thereby, it is the oldest convent in Moravia.
The, originally Romanic, monastery was rebuilt into today’s gothic form in the 14th century. It was plundered during the Hussite Wars, but it was then repaired and renewed. In the 16th century, the monastery decayed, the provost converted to Lutheranism and married one of the votaries. The vicious life experienced at the monastery led to an assault and violation by the people from its surrounding neighbourhood. Afterwards, the monastery was owned by several owners and it slowly became desolate. After the fire in 1703, it was decided to not repair the monastery any more.
The today’s form of the ruin is also practically unchanged from the beginning of the 18th century. It is a monumental gothic work that is made accessible to the public.
