The Place:
Weed is located where it is because of the wind. Because of the way the winds blow here it was perfect for the drying of lumber, and a lumberman by the name of Abner Weed took note of it and relocated his lumber mill here. That was in 1897 and total cost for the mill and 280 acres of land was $400. Soon it was a company town, then other large lumber producers located in Weed and the town grew. By the late 1950's the company houses had been sold to the residents and the lumber business began to decline. Today Weed has some 3,000 residents and lumber is no longer king.
The Person:
Weed owes its name to Abner Weed, the lumberman who in 1897 bought the Siskiyou Lumber and Mercantile Mill and 280 acres of land. Weed was a Civil War veteran and after selling his lumber company later served in the California legislature.
