Lincoln County was organized December 14, 1818. The county seat was originally in Monroe however its location in the southeast corner was in convenient and it was moved to Alexandria in 1823. The residents of the county petitioned and had the county seat moved to Troy in 1829.
The first courthouse in Troy was completed in 1830 and served the county until 1869. In 1870 present courthouse was completed. The courthouse was designed by architect Gustave Bachmann. The brick courthouse house originally measured 75-by-80-foot. It features a 30-foot portico with six fluted Corinthian columns. On the top of the courthouse house is a cupola about 82 at it peak.
The courthouse has had additions over the years including one in the 1930s and another in 1974.
The courthouse appears to be in good condition and continues to served as the county's courthouse.
