The large chateau on the hill dominates the town and the surroundings. At the beginning of the 13th century a medieval castle stood here. From 1249 to 1560 it belonged to the Austrian family of Lichtenštejn who turned the castle into a fortress. In the middle of the 15th cent, a famous "White Lady" lived here. As a defence against Turkish invasion the Lichtenštejns turned the castle into a Renaissance fortress. From 1575 to 1945 the chateau was owned by the Austrian family of Dietrichštejn. In 1805 Napoleon negotiated here with Austria about concluding peace. After modern reconstruction an exhibition of historical collections, exhibition of viticulture which is the local speciality.

Rozlehlý zámek na kopci je dominantou mesta i okolí. Zacátkem 13. stol. zde stával stredoveký hrad patrící pánum z Drnholce z rodu Kounicu. Od r. 1249 až do r. 1560 patril rakouskému rodu Lichtenštejnu, kterí hrad promenili v pevnost. Marne dobýván husity r. 1426. V polovine 15. stol. zde žila povestná „bílá paní"- Perchta z Rožmberka, manželka Kryštofa z Lichtenštejna. Na obranu pred tureckým vpádem Lichtenštejnové prestaveli hrad na renesancní pevnost. Od r. 1575 až do roku 1945 majiteli zámku rakouští Dietrichštejnové. V r. 1805 zde jednal Napoleon s Rakouskem o uzavrení míru. Po novodobé rekonstrukci expozice historických sbírek, výstava vinarství, které je specialitou okolí.
