The Linwood Cotton Mill was built around 1866 and is an Italianate design. It is 3 1/2 stories high sitting on a granite foundation. It has a slate mansard roof. On the front facade there is a 4 1/2 story central stairtower which dominates the building. An octagonal cupula sits atop the stairtower.
The mill was constructed at a time when the local economy had shifted from an agrarian to a manfacturing environment. The mill was alson known as the Whitin Brother Cotton Factory. The mill was used to manufacturer sateens and shirtings. It had a spindle capacity of 15,080 spindles. The machinery was driven by water by the Mumford River located right next to the mill. Around 1870 steam power was added to the mill.
The mill today has been converted to 55+ Senior housing called the Linwood Mill Apartments. It is one of the contributing properties to the Linwood Historic District.
